In doing these compilation benchmarks, you list the OS (kernel) used,
but you don't mention the compiler used (also you only use linux 2.4).
There are significant differences between version of gcc, and these
will inevitably have an effect on compilation times. I'll assume that
you used the same optimization settings (-OX), but to believe this
benchmark you'd need to assume the optimizations are the same on two
very different architectures (they're not).
What these benchmarks say nothing about, and what will be infinitely
more important for the average user, is how fast these programs run
once compiled. My own experience (similarly equiped Athlon 900, G3
350, running same OS), would lead me to believe that the PPC will in
general take longer to compile programs, but it will run those programs
at a comparable or greater speed. Better yet (from my perspective),
the PPC can perform at the same level while drawing far less power. So
the G3 requires only one fan for the entire case, while the athlon
requires a seperate CPU fan and case fan, just to keep the system from
overheating.
