mirror sites, bit torrent, etc.

I have tried to find some of the packages mentioned here and download
them. I have a dsl connection and have found some of the items but the
files are large enough to give Mozilla trouble. Bit Torrent seems to be
recomended but so far I have been too cheap to pay the 30 bucks to get
it. Ubuntu sounds like just what I want but so far so way to get it
here. At least no cheap/free way to get it here. So far I only have
experience with Debian. It doesn't seem too hard to install until you
get to x. Then all hell breaks loose. The basic os seems to work ok
and the shells do everything my limited knowledge allows me to try.
Sometimes I get stuck and have to turn it all off and try again, but
usually no damage to the disk. At this point there is absolutely
nothing on these disks but Linux, in other words, I have produced
nothing of any value to anyone with it yet so crashing a disk is not a
fearful thing for me. I'm just enough of a geek to not mind installing
and re-installing. (Not enough of a geek to know what I'm doing.)
