Ubuntu won't work on the Old beige G3 systems

see:
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/support/documentation/howto/installation-powerpc/view?searchterm=powerpc

I use Debian on an old 8500 but I only run is as a headless linux
only router so I can't comment on the X install or dual booting with Mac
OS.

Have a look in the Debian powerpc mailing archives
(http://lists.debian.org/search.html) there are some posts about getting
Debian running on beige G3's, you should also be able find find out about
the status of OpenOffice.
