It seems that if I leave the linux system on for about 10 hours or so, it
will just spontaneously reboot itself.
I thought perhaps something is 'overheating' beyond the tolerances that
Linux finds acceptable, although not sure why even when the CPU is idle
(or just running a lightweight screen saver) is a mystery.
Mac OS 9 (on the same machine) is always stable and I can leave on for
weeks at a time without a problem.
syslog shows nothing unusual or any message about why the reboot occured.
The last things in syslog are usually an entry about cron then sometime
later the reboot occurs with no explanation about why.
I have noticed though when it has rebooted into OS 9 (from one of Linux's
spontaneous reboot) the CPU seems to stay quite 'hot' at 40 degrees. It is
usually 32 degrees.
This whole Linux installation is not what I would call 'stable'. It is
pretty buggy to say the least, and I have to keep a CPU monitor up all the
time to make sure it is not getting into an infinite loop with 100% cpu
usage. For instance if I exit Vi...(the usual culprit) then often Vi is
'in the background' running at 100% cpu, or sometimes Vi will mysteriously
reappear as a process at 100% after I relog in. I have to use a kill -9
[PID] to get rid of it.
I am running Mandrake 9.1 PPC on a 7500 with a G3 card
A bit of Googling and similar situation I read about:

thanks for any advice.
