That's exactly how it happens -- the computer's network cards are set
at full duplex, but the switch or hub is set to half duplex (often
because it cannot do full duplex.) Or vice versa.
The fix is to force the computers to do half duplex. Even if you
think the hub can do full duplex, try forcing the computers to half
duplex.
I don't know how the virtual ethernet fits into all this ...
