I unplugged the HD I was worried about (and that power cable is $%#&
to remove, IMHO) and ran the installer.

One thing I wondered about earlier was this business about "empty
space" on the HD. Turns out the installer lets you make the needed
space by deleting the partition involved. I also wondered whether the
OS X Finder would display each and every partition the installer was
going to make. It turns out the Linux partitions are invisible to OS X
*and* OS 9. Disk Utility can see the partitions, so this works for me.

However, there was one thing that did not work well. At some point in
the installation progress (the third CD, after I've made my own
account), I was supposed to select the video card, display mode
(resolution), and screen. The problem was that none of my equipment
was available on the list, and available resolutions were either
really low (640x480) or too high for my screen. Every time I tried the
"test" option, I was sent back to the display setting menu. At some
point I found a combination that instead gave me a small blue
rectangle on the screen (there were five rows of black dots on the
top) with a mouse cursor in the middle. I could move the cursor with
the mouse, but otherwise, the everything was locked up. In the end I
    did a forced power-down.

And when I tried booting into Linux, I ended up with the same
black-with-vertical-blue-lines screen I got when trying the GUI
versions of the installer. I assume this is the result of interrupting
the installer at the video settings.

I am using a Quicksilver G4 with the stock GF2mx card and a 15" Apple
    LCD.

Anybody know what to do now?
