X login--Gnome OK, but not KDE?

I am running debian 'unstable' and have installed KDE3 and Gnome.
Running kdm, I am able to log in to X. If I choose Gnome, I get a
desktop and window, but if I choose kde3, I get KDE starting up [the
periperals... dialog with icons] but after that I just get the standard
Debian background image but no KDE desktop. twm doesn't work either.
Since Gnome works but the other managers don't, I am sure it must be
some really obvious error in configuration. But I can't work out where the
problem lies.

Any help would be most welcome
