I backup and restore Windows 98 FAT32 directory using tar, but not the whole
partition. It works perfectly backing up and restoring complete snapshot,
and only takes 100MB compressed (tar czpf) for 'C:\WINDOWS' and 'C:\Program
Files' within minutes (I use 98 only for games and education, so the size
may vary depending on what other software you installed.)
I use about 1GB partition for the 98 OS and all the rest of the programs are
installed in D: partition. This works quite well since most of the crashes
take down C: but not D:, and usually I only need to restore the OS, not
even the whole C: partition. No more hours of re-installing and tweaking to
exactly the same state just before it crashed.
I do that with XP too, but in FAT32 and not in NTFS (I have no need for NTFS
since most of my serious works are in ext3). Only the OS directories
(C:\WINDOWS, 'C:\Program Files', 'C:\Documents & Settings') reside in C:,
and it compresses to about 600MB. Again, XP is only for games and
education, so the size may differ.
So no problem with permissions as long as you use FAT32, and restore to the
same machine. And 98 or XP has no idea it has been killed and resurrected
to the exact same state it was backed up.
Just make sure to delete any temp files and swap files before tar to save
space. Create a script to do that.
