I have Mandrake Linux 10.0 installed and am trying to run KDE 3.2.
When I first installed linux, the KDE loading screen would stop at 85%
(Loading the Panel) and go no further. After leaving it like that the
loading screen goes away and your left with the blue background. I am
able to get KDE running without a problem when logging in as root. I
went in under root and started KDE, then I deleted my username
(harringd) and added it again. It worked that time and I got KDE
running.
Its been a few days now and all was going well, however I realized I
had messed a partition up and I formatted the drive, and reinstalled
linux. Now i'm back at the same problem again. I even tried
reinstalling linux AGAIN. If I add a new user, the first login it
will freeze at 42 percent, and after that sometimes I'll get in but
with an error saying 'During the previous startup, KNotify crashed
while instantiating KNotify. Do you want to try again of disable aRts
sound output? TRY AGAIN, DISABLE ARTS OUTPUT'. Whenever I get in
(always with that error) I have no desktop icons or background, just a
blue background like the one used when KDE is starting up. Changes
made using 'configure desktop' do not affect it. Usually thats the
only time i'll get into KDE, after logging out (which hangs and i have
to CTRL-ALT-BKSPACE my way out) it will hang at 85% even if you try
over and over.
Also, my ethernet does not appear to be recognized/working properly in
mandrake, as it says ETH0 FAILED during the new-hardware check on
boot. The ethernet is onboard, and I tried disabling it in BIOS but
that still made no difference, other than the hardware check on boot
skipping it and presenting no 'FAILED' text.
Any help with my situation appreciated.
Doug
