Use VGA/XGA output, bypass screen

I'm making pictures in matlab which need to go out in real time,
through an XGA port to a bit of hardware.
The thing is, I don't want to send any of the screen image surrounding
my picture, just the picture I've generated.
I don't even need to see the picture!
What can I do? Split screen? What commands can I use to reconfigure
the output?
My lab uses redhat linux on this computer.
