What you will need is a "Power PC" version of Linux (also referred to as a
"PPC" version), Red Hat's equivalant in PPC linux is called Yellow Dog
Linux, there is also a version of Mandrake available for the PPC.

Note: As with X86 Linux take proper precsautions and do a backup of
data/programs in case you accidentally reformat the drive. of what's
currently on it. Also unlike Mac OS not all the Mac hardware is well
supported yety on PPC Linux, with an iMac you should be more fortunate then
others whpo discover they have non-supported video cards, etc.

Also fortunately the iMac is a "new world" ROM machine and you can boot from
the CD to install Linux (the older 'Old World ROM Macs you have to set up a
spacial BootX control panel to manage the startup/install)

Also if you have specific progams in mind to run (beyond the standards like
Apache PHP, MySQL, Open Office, Mozilla, Etc.) you should first check to
see if there is PPC versions of those programs, otherwise you may have to
    configure/compile them yourself. :-/
