mp3 players

why is it so difficult to get mp3 players to work with linux? I really like
xmms which works well on suse, but suse doesnt support my hardware as well as
fedora core 3. fedora will not let me play mp3s on xmms no matter what I do.
I have installed everything I could find that should have worked including
mpg123 and the packages recommended by xmms. I also can't find any other mp3
players that will let me que an album or multiple files. fedora suggested
real player which will play only one mp3 at a time.the default player that
comes with fedora also will not play mp3s (helix?) is there a simple answer
or a better distribution?
