Using grep I was able to find file "passwordfd.so" in
/usr/lib/pppd/2.4.1. I looked in /etc first, but didn't find any file
with "passwordfd" in it. I tried /usr and found it.
It seems as if it is a plugin to pppd. It must have been added when I
did the automatic software update for security patches.
This directory was not in my $PATH. I included the directory in my $PATH
and was then able to connect and stay connected.
