Hi,
I am having a serious problem with booting Linux RedHat9.0 on a dual
AMD 2800+.
We are using the linux box for CPU-intensive jobs, that require a lot
of writing to disk. All of a sudden, the box froze, and after
restarting it, Linux boots from a GRUB boot loader, then i choose the
smp kernel, starts to go through the hardware checks, but then i get
the message "Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init = option to
kernel". Nothing happens after that. These are the things i tried, yet
not of them worked so far:
Tried to boot from CD/floppy, then from hard drive, same problem.
Reinstalled RH9.0 from scratch, same problem.
Reinstalled RH8.0, same problem.
Checked the drive for bad blocks during linux installation, no
reported bad blocks.
Booted from a root floppy, checked the sbin/init, it is there.
Reading dome previous postings, i got a new hard drive, installed
Linux on it, same problem.
Swapped the hard drive to the secondary master (for checking the board
IDE connection), changing also the IDE cable, same problem.
Reset the CMOS in the board before installing, swapping the ram
sticks, same problem.
Installing Windows 2000/xp was possible without any problem.
Any ideeas what could be wrong? I am starting to lose my patience with
this system. Any advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Liviu
