It sounds like you need to reconfigure X for your video card and
monitor refresh rates.
Switch to runlevel 3
This can be done if you login as root and enter:
telinit 3
Then when it gets to a text login prompt login as root
and answer the questions asked when you run the command:
xf86config
Then you can test it by running the command "startx"
Once you get it setup the way you need it you can switch back to
"runlevel 5" (GUI) with "telinit 5".
