Before I dig too far and try recreating the wheel,...

Is there a kit or howto out there that will help with steps to create a
custom Linux CD?

I'd like to put the CD into a system (must autodetect the network card),
boot it up, have the root and binaries run from the CD but mount hard
drive partitions for /var and /etc, so the system could be configured
across reboots and save log files but the binaries would be read-only.

Any projects out there that could help with creating something like this?

Thanks!
