Hi all,
I have never posted to these two groups before but I'm hoping one of you
would be kind enough to help me. I would greatly appreciate any advice any
of you can offer.
I recently upgraded from SUSE Pro 8.2 to SUSE Pro 9. One major issue I had
with SUSE 8.2 was that when installed on my Toshiba Satellite 2100 CDS I
get serious display corruption when running X. I suspected (hoped) this
might be an issue which was fixed in version 9. Unfortunately the issue
remains. I therefore now suspect this may be an X issue with my particular
graphics card (the display is fine in Windows 98 SE but who wants to use
that!). However, I have subsequently come to wonder if it might be a issue
that I can resove by changing the graphics settings in SaX2 (or even
manually). Perhaps if I give you details of my setup you could provide
help with changes I could make in order to get the display to work
correctly.
Here are the details of my system setup in case they are of use to any of
you:
Toshiba Satellite 2100 CDS (notebook)
400 Mhz AMD K6-2 (3D NOW)
192MB RAM
21.1 DTSN screen configured by SUSE YaST2/SaX2 as:
Card: S3 ViRGE/MX ( s3virge )
Monitor: --> VESA 800X600@60HZ [ 31-38 kHZ / 50-60 Hz ]
Resolutions: 800x600
Color depth: 16 bit
3D Acceleration:
Unavailable

The corruption appears as bands of interference accross the display. They
often appear across the program I am working in and are a nusience as it
prevents me being able to see what I am doing. If I move around the window
of the application I am working in it will sometimes clear up or scrolling
up and down in a browser window may also temporarily fix things. However,
the issue will alays come back and makes it very difficult to work.
Similarly, I often get reminants of screen changes staying on screen after
they should have disapepared. For example in the Opera browser if i hover
my mouse over an image with a title in the img tag it displays but does
not go away (scrolling up and down may clear it). This is not an Opera
issue as a test install on a second machine I had access to does not
result in this problem.
So my question is. Are there any changes I could make or some update I
could download that would fix this issue or is it simply a case of my
hardware not being supported by SUSE (or Linux more generally)? I have not
had a chance to test other versions of Linux on this machine yet, though
if I do get a chance and have some success I will report back.
Any help or advice in resolving this setup issue would be greatly
appreciated.
