Hi all
Background
==========
Recently put Mandrake 9.2 on a new Compaq Presario
(dual boot with WinXP until I can wean my g/f from MSoft). I had a
problem with the DSL modem (subsequently sorted out) but whilst I was
troubleshooting that issue I used DrakConnect to configure the WinModem
preinstalled on my Mdk box to try and see if I could dial out to the
internet and check out my ISP's tech support pages.
The Problem
===========
The upshot of this bit of experimentation is that the DrakConnect page
now features 'modem' as the internet access type and I haven't found a
way to get it to switch back to 'LAN'; which means that my now fixed
DSL/Router is being ignored by the Mandrake box (and the Winmodem isn't
working either, so I'm having to use my W2k laptop to write this
message).
So ping to localhost works fine, but a ping to the router or out to the
internet gets 'Network is unreachable' or 'unknown host' responses.
I've done a bit of rummaging around in /etc/sysconfig and
/etc/netprofile which appears to be the areas that DrakConnect was
touching yesterday morning, but I'm reluctant to make any changes by
hand here until I'm a bit more knowledgeable about how these various
config files work together to drive the hardware.
The Question(s)
===============
(i) is there a way I can get DrakConnect
to switch from 'Modem' to 'LAN' without rooting around in the files by
hand?
(ii) (Assuming the answer to (i) is 'no') Is there a simple way to wipe
the slate clean so that DrakConnect starts as though from new? It
connected up the DSL modem easy as pie when I did the OS install first
time around and I'm happy to defer serious mucking around in the system
until I have more time available.
(iii) (Assuming (i) and (ii) are a bust) Where should I be focusing my
attention if I have to get my hands dirty and start hacking config files
for this? Pointers to HOW-TOs or similar forum posts are fine at this
stage - I'm willing to plunge in and twiddle away, but I'd like some
insight into what I'm twiddling before I start and nothing I've seen online
so far has leapt out at me as the obvious place to look.
Technical Stuff
===============
Its Mandrake 9.2 on a Compaq Presario box.
The Hardware detector from the Mandrake Control Centre tells me that the
Ethernet is a Realtek RTL-8139 but doesn't appear to notice the
Winmodem.
I'm using a Netgear DM602 DSL Modem/Router connected directly to the
ethernet port.
Here's the output from ifconfig:
