[Debian] Gnome goes "slow"...

Good afternoon,
I've installed the X Window System and then Gnome 1.4 but I find it
works "slow": for example, when I type some character using gedit I
see that they're "late"... if I type very fast random characters gedit
completes the sequence after more than a second.
Does anybody know possible reasons for this problem?
Thanks to all,

Stefano
