debian 3.0r2 video driver problem (text mode, install)

Ok, I've installed Debian 3.0r2 on two different systems with
different video setup, and I've also installed Suse 9.0. I've come to
the conclusion that the video mode on Debian install (the semi-text
mode, I believe is 640x480 60hz) is not 'correctly driven' by Debian.

Basically, I have seen different programs using that 'mode', and the
screen size/position matches precisely to what my BIOS page displays
(which also happens to be that mode).

But whenever Debian goes into that mode, the screen is shifted to the
right somewhat and I have to compensate by re-adjusting the screen to
the left. But this messes up my bios page and other programs that uses
this mode.

Since every other program I've tried that uses that mode, including
Suse's install, behaves exactly the same as the BIOS page on both
systems, I think there are some 'problems' with the way Debian
switches to or drives that mode.

Has this been reported by anyone before? I am running the default
kernel 2.4 from the Debian install.

If no one knows the answer, can someone then tell me

1. how to disable that video mode and have Debian uses plain old text
mode (like what Lilo uses) when it boots up and in console mode? I am
relatively new to linux and I don't know how to configure it.

Thanks.

Raymond
