I bought a USR external modem (model 5686) last summer. Had problems with
it. Long series of e-mails with tech support. Finally they agreed to
replace it, like this:

"Standard turn around time is 7-10 business days upon our receipt of the
defective modem. The replacement modem is shipped through Airborne
Express."

When I suggested that many companies send a replacement *first*, they said:

"The alternative is to contact our tech support group via phone and order
the product replacement via Advance shipment option. This option affords
for a product to be sent to you within 3 to 5 business days first. The
package comes with a prepaid shipping lable to send the defective one
back to us. This method is a charged shipping order. The order Requires
a $25 dollar fee for shipping, non refundable. The charge is not placed
until the product actually ships."

Tech support group lacketh a toll-free number.

My USR modem cost $99US and carries a three-year warranty. I wouldn't buy
another USR modem.
