I forgot to mention - when I click on the speaker icon on the bottom
right of the screen the error message reads: Couldn't open mixer device
/dev/sound/mixer

When I browse the hardware the sound card is identified.

I have tried going into sound preferences and setting "enable sound
server startup" to see if that will work.
