Midi Setup

I have recently downloaded and booted from the new Demudi 1.1.1 live-CD
distrobution (from agnula.org). I don't get any sound from the midi
apps, e.g. the midi keyboard, etc.

IIRC, my machine is a 3-months old amd xp-2600 on an ECS motherboard,
whatever was on special at Fry's when a friend bought the MB and chip
for me. unfortunately, my wife pitched the motherboard manual on me,
but I know that it has sound on it. The sample sound plays when I
install Fedora, and even the Demudi live CD says goodbye to me when I
shut down the OS. But I haven't figured out what it takes to make MIDI
playing happen.

I'm pretty new at both linux and computer music, and I'm just looking
for a way to set up or maybe write apps that will let me write music in
ordinary music notation and play it. I've had no luck under various
linux distros that I've tried at installing and setting up such apps
that don't come as part of the OS distribution. It seems that every app
has a half-dozen dependencies, and as I try to track down and install
all the packages I need, I always wind up with something that won't
install or with something broken. That's why I thought that Demudi
would be ok, as it includes apps like Rosegarden as part of the
distribution. But that isn't working for me yet, either.

Is there anywhere a step-by-step for finding out if MIDI sound output
will work on a particular machine that also tells how to make it work?

If I can get this to work, is there any way to convert the Demudi live
CD into a bootable system on my hard drive?

TIA

Al
