2.6 kernel install tutes

OK now, I'm really confused with kernel upgrades here. I'm presently
messing with a 2.4 kernel under Debian and am looking to upgrade to
the 2.6 kernel for the SATA support. I am yet to find a good, clear
tute on doing kernel upgrades. Does anyone know of a good one on the
net?
