Cannot connect to X server

Lately (and periodically) I've run into the problem where I can't run X progs
as root. I have KDE on Debian unstable. For instance, I can't run Kedit as
root, getting this error message: kedit: cannot connect to X server :0.0
xhost +localhost doesn't fix the problem. If I do su -m it does fix it. I
would like to be able to run X apps as root, with root's environment,
automatically
