redhat to mandrake questions

I have installed mandrake 10 for assessment
coming from RH 9.

A couple of questions.

How does one log on as root through the GUI,
no option is presented and no "File manager super user"
menu entry exists in mandrake. Logging out only
presents the single user option to log back in (no root)

I use "Kate" but I can't get the file navigation side
panel to stay open. Kate restarts with the panel closed
and the default large icons.
I have checked "Restore window configuration".
