I think your chatscript has ATDT for touch tone rather than AT__ for
pulse in it (can't remember what it is: ATDP? ATPT?)
Find the file called by /usr/sbin/chat, which in Debian is in
/etc/chatscripts/provider.
Mine looks like this (with X's replacing the obvious):
ABORT BUSY
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT VOICE
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
"" ATZW2 # initialize modem
OK ATDTXXXXXXX <--------- # phone number
ogin "you@your.isp"
word \qXXXXXXXXXX
Pretty sure that's it, but here are some other thoughts...
The other place to look is in the config file for pppd which is
called /etc/ppp/options in Debian - man 8 pppd.
You may have to do something like set hardware flow control to
on. The file is well-commented.
(Most graphical tools for stuff like this SUCK: If they work you
are there, and if they don't, you are screwed. Debian's pppconfig
works GREAT and the author hangs out on these groups: John Hasler.)
The experts in this sort of stuff hang out on comp.protocol.ppp
