It creates a fingerprint, or digest, of a file. This fingerprint is
unique, and if the file changed, so does the md5sum. This is used
to check the integrity of files. Say, you download a program from
the net, and you calculate the md5sum of the downloaded file.
Then you compare it to the one provided where you downloaded it
from. If they match, then you can be assured that there was no error
in the transmission.
