Turns out no need to add an entry - the Hotplugger does that as and when
necessary, on a temporary basis, as with other USB devices.

The problem I'm having is that my Intel 865PE chipset BIOS will not boot
from the external USB drive, which I need it to do for backup/restore
    purposes.
What did work was booting it from the SuSE 9.0 installation disk, but
would it have booted it if it had not been a Linux system on the external
    drive?
