Linux installation problem

I am trying to install Redhat 7.3 as the workstation. It keeps telling
me that I need to have a root partition which I try to create by
typing /; . The computer already has XP on it but I am trying to
install 7.3 on top of it. Any ideas? Would appreciate the help.
