Hi there,

I've got SuSE 9.1 installed on ide0 (ie master), all on one big partition
with a little swap partition. I now have to install Windows XP to cope
with stupid people who can't make cross-platform software, and no, I can't
use Wine. So, I thought to myself, that'll be easy. What I'll do is:

Get new hard drive.

Make the new hard drive the master for the time being.

Install XP on it (also on one partition).

Switch them back round and add an entry:

title Windows
    root (hd1)
    chainloader +1

to GRUB's menu.lst

Boy, was I wrong. Much RTF[manual|newsgroups|microsoft support|google]
later, came to the conclusion that the people that came up with the concept
of dual booting were either much smarter or much thicker than me. The
jury's still out ;) Of course, I blame Microsoft also.

I seem to be in a bit of an odd situation, having a perfectly good Linux
install first and then trying to plonk down XP. As far as I can gather,
what I planned to do is simply impossible; XP can't cope with not being the
big boy on the block. But it isn't clear (to me at least) what one does
with what bootloader to be able to dualboot. I've found stuff about
installing MS-DOS first (which I don't have a copy of), but I really don't
see the point of installing one useless OS just so I can boot another one.

If anyone has come across an easy way of doing this, I would be more than
grateful.

Cheers,
Calum
