No /dev/hda on Dell laptop

I am getting ready to install Fedora Core 2 on my Dell Inspiron laptop
to dual boot with XP. I used Partition Magic to resize the Windows
partition, and I used the rescue disk to check the partitions. There
is a bug in the FC2 installer which makes XP unbootable which can be
avoided if you run the installer with CHS disk geometry parameters
specified. But the rescue disk didn't find a /dev/hda. Apparently the
OS is on /dev/hdc, which should be the first disk on the second IDE
drive. I've never seen that before, and I thought XP had to be on
/dev/hda in order to boot. Has anyone seen anything like this before?
Will I be able to proceed?
