Philip, thanks for taking the time to compose such a useful response.

I'm not sure why people seem so against installing things from source.
Five days ago I literally knew nothing about linux other than that it
was an alternative operating system, and if I had not taken this route
I don't think I would have learned as much as I have, little though
that is, as quick.

Yes I've had problems, but with help from others I have overcome them.
When I get this kdebase package installed I will have a working KDE
desktop and next time I will be able to install the whole thing in
about 5 hours total and that's only because the makes take so long.(
as a side question , why do the makes take so long? I'm on a 700MHz
Duron)

I haven't used any sort of package manager, but that doesn't mean I
never will, it's just that this more difficult route is a better
learning route, in my opinion.

That said, I am stuck with this kdebase install problem. If you read
my other post it should be fixable by installing the latest Freetype2
build. I have installed this but I don't know how to make sure that
the system uses only the latest build and not the original. If you can
shed any light on this I would be grateful.

On the issue of upgrading software and finding what you have installed
and what version it is. I installed the basic VL4.0 as stated I
therefore know nothing about what it has installed. Is there no
'simple' way to find out what apps and versions of apps are installed?

Once again thanks for your useful and positive post
