Knoppix 3.4: How to get '|' character on keyboard

Using a UK keyboard, when using Knoppix (3.4) I can't get a '|' character
on the keyboard.

Using the key to the left of 'z', I get the following:

        Lower case: '<' (Instead of '\')
        Upper case: '>' ( Instead of '|')

Tried setting KDE congif to 'UK', but didn't make any difference.

I need to use the '|' character for a 'pipe' function!

How does one achieve that with Knoppix?
