Dear Wizards: I bought a bigger harddrive, connected it to an IDE
channel, copied all the partitions, and want to make this my only
harddrive. So, now I need to handle the boot stuff. Alas, weird
things are happening:
- even running lilo on my prior hard drive (/dev/hda) gives me a
message that lilo wants to set the volume id for my disk, and
fortunately warns me that doing so would stop my windows/XP (on
partition 2) from booting. obviously, at this point I say "don't do
it" so lilo aborts. (running drakconf, then try to set the boot
unfortunately seems to hang the computer @!@#!; so command line is
better than nothing.)
- for the new drive, I chroot to /mnt/hdb5 (my new linux partition),
edit the lilo.conf file to make /dev/hdb the drive to which it should
write, change all the hda references to hdb references, and try to run
lilo. now lilo tells me some error message about raid and aborts.
there is no raid on this computer whatsoever (neither hardware nor
software)---they are just two IDE drives.
has anyone written a script that makes a new drive appropriately
bootable after such a transfer. this fiddling and guessing with lilo
is not fun.
help appreciated.
sincerely,
/ivo
