In theory perhaps, but in reality things look different, as you
just have encountered. You first need to check if linux can see
the device, open some xterm/kvt, 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi' and
'dmesg' should show something about it. If not, the proper module
wasn't loaded.
Check with 'lsmod'. You can use 'hwinfo' to get more info,
sometimes it can suggest the module needed, if not, 'lspci'
should offer some more hints about the controller.
