You should have something like this:

#to automatically load OSS compatibility drivers
above snd-pcm snd-pcm-oss
above snd-mixer snd-mixer-oss
above snd-seq snd-seq-oss

#to automatically load the sound card driver
alias sound-slot-0 snd-via82xx
alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx

(if snd-via82xx is the right driver for your chip).

This should load the drivers automatically. But you already said that
you could load them manually and it still didn't work, so I don't think
it will make a difference.
