This is symptomatic of the ALSA drivers: all too often people with the
same setups report widely different behaviors as far as the ALSA drivers
are concerned. These drivers are the most unreliable, annoying piece of
software inflicted upon Linux users. When are the ALSA people going to do
something about it? Are they happy in the knowledge that their software is
the black sheep of the Linux world?
