Please do not top post!
I'll take it for granted that you know the difference between a Netgear
switch and a Netgear router, and that you have cabled them correctly. But
when you say you need to add an extra network adapter for your simple
network configuration, I start thinking twice that you may not really know
what you're doing.
Are you running any firewall software on the Windows boxes? Can you ping one
windows box to another? Can the XP box on the router ping the W98 boxes on
the switch, and visa-versa?
Post the results of this command on the linux box:
# route -n
Post the results of this command on the XP box (caveat, I am not running
XP):
c:\>route print
