This is a very bad mistake. IMHO the only way to repair this is to
hand-edit /etc/passwd. Don't even think of having two users with same login
name or password. The "real" root has a user ID of zero, and generally
appears as the first entry in /etc/passwd.

I can think of a better way to differentiate the two accounts -- different
login names and passwords.

No, this is never allowed.
