Disable kudzu, if it is used. This symptom is common in distributions that
use kudzu during boot-up.

1. Get into runlevel 1 if you can.

2. As root:

# chkconfig kudzu off

Mandrake may have a different way to accomplish this, the above is
Fedora-specific. I apologize if this doesn't work on Mandrake.
