USB storage device -- how to find /dev entry easily?

Is there any way of telling in advance which /dev entry to use when
mounting a USB storage device? I've looked at linux major/minor device
IDs, SCSI parameters, the lsusb command and all sorts of other stuff, but
can't make head nor tail of it.
