A Google suggests that that distro is at least four and a half years old.
Given the rate of development Linux has undergone in that time, installing
it is somewhat like installing MS-DOS 6 and Windows 3.1.

Unless you specifically (and repeatedly) requested that version of Linux,
I'd suggest your vendor is either incompetent or acting in the interests of
someone other then you (their customer). Either way, I'd think it time to
find a new vendor.

Try getting a current distro and then worry about why anything doesn't work.

A Knoppix Live CD should allow you to access the data. Depending on your
skill, it could be beyond your current ability. You might want to get in
touch with your nearest Linux User Group and ask for assistance in
extracting the data and installing Linux.

Why not? The last computer I bought with pre-installed software came with
copies of CD (which are now sitting gathering dust on a shelf as I promptly
formatted and repartitioned the harddisk to install Debian). Perhaps this
is another instance of your vendor not doing a good job.
