FS/inode info/perms are stored using numeric uids/gids.
That's likely the source of your probs. Also caveat about
gnome/kde state dirs (dot-files and dot-dirs) is a good one.
For instance, both kde and gnome setup sockets in /tmp ..
and keep pointers to those in their dotdirs.
