Generally I think its memory (Memtest86) might be 1 bad chip.
$ tail -n 300 /var/log/messages
$ tail -n 200 /var/log/messages.1
$ tail -n 200 /var/log/Xorg.log
$ dmesg
$ top
# to see the running tasks and cpu utilization.
I'd also look at removing the new ATI Driver and running at runlevel 3 to
see if the problem is specific to running X.
