Du you have all the requisite programs and tools needed for a 2.6
kernel (see Documentation/Changes)? A current version of 'mount'?
I assume that /dev/cdrom1 is a symbolic link.
Can you do an ls -l of what it points to?
Are there any messages in /var/log/messages? Any in dmesg?
Can you describe your CDROM drive?
What kernel options have you used to build a driver for it?
Do you use devfs?

I think there's nothing wrong with upgrading a RedHat 9 system to a 2.6
kernel.
