"could not chown/chmod tty device" at login

Hello,

I'm working with Linux/Debian for something like a year now, and really
like it. I already installed several servers with it and my own computer
and laptops.

I was able to solve all my problems with the help of google, until now...

When I boot my laptop (a Toshiba M200) I can't login into the console.
It gives me the following message (instead of the console-login):

    could not chown/chmod tty device
    could not chown/chmod tty device
    etc.
INIT: Id "#" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
("#" = it gives this message for Id 1-6)

I've installed kdm, and am able to start KDE, but I can't enter my
standard-console.

I've checked the ownership of my tty devices but they are the same as on my
server:
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 5, 0 2005-01-29 13:04 tty
crw------- 1 root tty 4, 0 2005-01-10 22:10 tty0
crw------- 1 root root 4, 1 2005-01-28 15:46 tty1

and the tty-group exists.

I already removed some links from /etc/rc2.d to exclude some services as
the cause.
I run on the standard 2.6.8-1-686 Debian kernel as well as my own
compiled 2.6.10 kernel (although some options of the 2.6.10 config may
be based on the standard kernel config).

Can anyone help me solve this problem, because I'm out of options
(except reinstalling Debian-Sarge)

Thanks in advance
Leon
