I'm sorry, and I'm not trying to be snippy, either. My correction of
Hugh was correct. There is no group around called
microsoft.public.win98.gen.discussion. There *is* apparently a rogue NG
called microsoft.public.win98.general.discussion, but it isn't hosted on
Microsoft's servers. Nobody who logs into news://msnews.microsoft.com is
going to see that group. Only if you log into another news server, or
http://groups.google.com and probably not too many of those, are you
going to find that NG.

Just pointing that out, since you might want to not use that group.
There were approx. 37,200 messages posted to
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion in 2004--there were only 92
messages posted to microsoft.public.general.discussion in that same
period.

For myself, that's all I have the time or inclination to pursue. Seems
to me that plenty of folks have already answered your other questions.
