Newbie : Mandrake Installation

I just installed mandrake 10.1. It installed fine , but when I try to
start it it gets stuck at
examining root partition ...
I left it on for about 1/2 hour without anything changing.
I got 2 hdd's 40 & 120 GB . I put linux on the 40 gb and winxp on the
120 gb seperate disk. So they boot seperately ( changing the settings
from bios ).
The installation was fine without any errors.
The last linux installation (ubuntu) I loaded got stuck coz of monitor
setup error ... not sure if it is still that problem as the kernel
loader itself has a GUI here.
Pls help ( remember newbie instructions )
