It's probably started via init.d using xdm. Get to a console command
prompt without X running. As root, type X -configure. Look in
~/xorg.conf.new and check it out. Make sure it looks right. Copy it to
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and, if you feel racy, do something like "echo
"fluxbox" > ~/.xinitrc". Then type "xinit".

Find out what the errors are.
